Living Green, the Time is Now
There is no “right” way to begin living green, but there is a right time – and the time is now. Mother Green has a few tips that can help get you on your way to developing more environmentally responsible habits.
First, you have to make it a priority to live green. Almost everything you do involves a decision that affects our planet. When you begin to consider the environment in making consumer choices you take the most important step – awareness. What do you think about when you purchase an item from a store? Cost. Function. Appeal. Perhaps you can ask a few more questions like: Is this product made from recycled materials? Is the factory considering the environment in its manufacturing practices? What happens when it is time to dispose of the product? There are more questions than these, but being aware is a great start.
Another easy practice is to recycle. Recycling doesn't take too much effort, but the impact of recycling makes a huge difference. For example, 20 years ago Waste Management began their “Recycle America” campaign. Since then they have recycled over 55 million tons of garbage that didn't end up in landfills. This number will continue to grow as more people place an importance on recycling.
It is also important to become an efficient user of your resources and not be wasteful. Reusable shopping bags are becoming a widely accepted replacement for plastic and paper shopping bags. This practice reduces waste, uses fewer natural resources and helps the safety of our fish and wildlife. There are too many other items – such as plastic water bottles, paper towels, and sandwich bags – that we waste each day. Think about it. What can you do to reduce waste?
These ideas just scratch the surface of living green, but they’re a start. If you can become more aware, begin to recycle, and reduce waste you will become part of Mother Green’s solution. It starts with you and it starts now. Take care.
